The capital of Brazil is Brasília, a city built from scratch in the country’s interior and inaugurated in 1960 to replace Rio de Janeiro. Designed by Lúcio Costa and with major architecture by Oscar Niemeyer, Brasília features unique, modernist architecture and a plan in the shape of an airplane. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique design, modernist role in development, and as a forward-looking symbol of Brazil’s progress.
