The capital of Gabon is Libreville, a major port city on the Gabon Estuary near the Gulf of Guinea, which serves as the country’s economic, cultural, and educational center. Founded in 1849 as a resettlement site for freed slaves, Libreville grew significantly during French colonial rule and after Gabon’s independence in 1960, becoming a key hub for trade and education with the national university, Omar Bongo University, located there.
