Tokyo, officially known as the Tokyo Metropolis, is the capital of Japan and the most populous metropolitan area in the world. Historically, the seat of the Japanese government and the emperor moved from Kyoto to Edo in 1868, when the city was renamed Tokyo, or “Eastern Capital”.
